We are increasingly getting the following questions:
- Is my brand visible in ChatGPT ?
- Can my company be found on Gemini ?
- Why is my product not mentioned when I search it in Perplexity ?
More and more users are switching to ChatGPT&co to get answers to their everyday questions. Usage of those tools is increasing every month.
Logically, companies are now looking for ways to foster their presence on those platforms.
From traditional SEO to AI visibility
Up until now being visible on Google was pretty straightforward. You either used Google ads, to buy your spot on the top of the listing. Or you did search engine optimisation.
With what we can call “Vintage SEO”, it was also easy to estimate how much traffic Google would send your way. They had, and still largely have, a monopoly on organic traffic. Thanks to tools like Google Search Console, you could track impressions and clicks for each keyword with a fair degree of precision.
The industry being 20 years old, it made the tactics and strategies clear: Technical SEO, content marketing & Link building. Not much had changed in the last few years.
But tactics that worked no longer are the best ones. They produce different or no results. Now it feels, it’s all hidden inside of the algorithms. It’s time to rethink SEO, which, by the way, makes it exciting again in my opinion.
SEO just got a new name. Some of the acronyms you can find online…
- GEO: Generative AI Optimization (or GAIO?)
- LEO: LLMs Engine Optimization
- LLMO: Large Language Model Optimization
- AEO: Answer Engine Optimization
- ASO: AI Search Optimization (!?)
- AI SEO
They are all the same in my option, it is all about visibility in AI results. A new flavor of SEO of sorts.
Is AI visibility optimization worth your investment?
Do you need to invest time and energy in improving your IA visibility?
A growing trend
Currently you could consider their usage « minimal ». Especially when you compare Google usage vs ChatGPT for example. The second is still dwarfed by the big G.
On the other hand, the trends are clear. This research by SemRush estimates that AI visitors will surpass « regular » users in 2028.

AI mode first
Google is pushing its AI overviews, which are quite different from the traditional 10 blue links! The consensus, it that it usage will increase, thus the overall experience of Google will tend to merge with the one of ChatGPT/Claude/Perplexity.

How much traffic you currently get from ChatGPT?
The incoming traffic from LLM to your website is probably very low. But very qualified of for sure: longer time on site, better conversion rate.
With Google analytics, it is fairly easy to filter out those visitors and compare them to the rest of the traffic.
A step by step guide
- Log into Google Analytics
- Check the Acquisition > Traffic Acquisition report
- Add a filter
- Choose «Session Source-medium» and «mates regex » as the Match Type.
- Then copy the following value ^*\.openai.*|.*copilot.*|.*chatgpt.*|.*gemini.*|.*gpt.*|.*neeva.*| .*writesonic.*|.*nimble.*|.*perplexity.*|. *google.*bard.*| .*bard.*google.*|.*bard.*|.*edgeservices.* |.*bnngpt.*|.*gemini.*google.*$
- Apply
- Change to « Session source/medium » to see the detail (see screenshot).

How to check if you are being cited in the LLMs?
Now that you know what is happening on your website. Here are few tips to check your presence in LLMs
Directly in the tools.
Ask ChatGPT to list the best 10 companies in your region doing WHAT you do (best electrician in Basel, best coworking in Basel, etc..).
But beware: ChatGPT knows your conversation history. Most probably, it knows for which company you work. And therefore will tweak its results.
Always make sure to compare with ChatGPT in a private browsing session. Or compare it with the results from your partner (not working in the same company). Usually the results are different.
Do the same with Claude, Perplexity and Bing. You will get a feeling on where you stand.
AI visibility tools
Tons of tools are pivoting to Ai visibility tracking. In order to show you how many times your brand is mentioned in the different LLMs.
Those tools are very reliable, show widely different results and super expensive. But that all we have for now.
Here are 3 example:
- Ahrefs
- SemRush
- Or Profound
A more extensive list of tools is coming soon.
What to do next?
In my opinion, currently this is often not the top priority. But if you are not ranking at all, or you have optimized the other aspects of digital marketing. Then yes. Considering a GEO project could be a good way to kick start the year.
And yes, obviously, we can help you with our SEO / GEO service 😉
